Senior Travel Deals Clearwater Florida Senior Resort & Vacation Community

Clearwater, Florida is a popular resort and vacation community that caters to senior citizens.

Clearwater FL History

Literally translated "Clear Water", native Indians named the area for its abundant fresh springs along the shore. Early settlers called it Clear Water Harbor. Spanish explorer Panfilo de Narvaez came to the Pinellas peninsula in 1528. In 1567,

Pedro Menendez arrived searching for a route across Florida. He and his men perished in battles with the natives, who had been mistreated by previous exploration parties. Europeans did not return to this area until the 1800’s.

During the Seminole Indian Wars of 1835, the government built the original Fort Harrison as a recuperation Center for soldiers. It was located on the bluffs where Harbor Oaks is now. The first European settler was French doctor Odet Philippe, who served under Gen. Napoleon Bonaparte. He established St. Helena Plantation in what is now Safety Harbor.

The Federal Armed Occupation Act of 1842 gave 160 acres to any head of family or single man over 18 who would bear arms and cultivate the land. Most settlers farmed vegetables and cotton. The railroad came to the area in 1888. To boost passenger business, several grand resort hotels were built, including the Belleview Biltmore in 1897. Tourists came to Clearwater because of its mild climate and reputation as a resort community. The city of Clearwater incorporated on May 27, 1915.
