Inverness FL History
In 1880, the Crown Hotel was constructed and later moved to its current location in Inverness. Coca Cola was introduced to Citrus County in the early 1900’s. W. T. Baxley acted as a sub-bottler to the Tampa Coca Cola Bottling Company and began bottling Coca Cola in Hernando in 1906. Empty bottles were washed in Hernando Lake, then filled and transported by horse drawn wagon to Inverness. In 1914, World War I was underway, and the phosphate mines in Hernando closed. W. T. Baxley then moved his building and business to Inverness. In the early years, it took a year to use a 50-gallon barrel of syrup, producing around 250 cases. The bottling company developed into a thriving and prosperous business.

In 1910, the Masonic Temple was dedicated in Inverness. It was a three-story brick building costing $17,285, the most costly building in the county at that time. The Bank of Inverness building was built in 1916. It was the only bank in the area to survive the “Great Depression”. The City of Inverness incorporated in 1919.
