Port Charlotte FL History
American History began in Charlotte Harbor, Florida in 1513 with the officially sanctioned exploration of Florida's east and west coasts by Ponce de Leon. He returned to the Charlotte Harbor area in 1521 to establish a colony. After working six weeks to build a fort and church, the expedition was attacked by Calusa Indians. De Leon was wounded in the thigh by an arrow and gangrene set in. The entire colony returned to Havana, where Ponce died of his wound.
in 1565, the Spanish explorer Pedro Menendez D'Aviles built a mission/fort named San Antonio somewhere in the Charlotte Harbor area. After two years of alternate cooperation and bloody warfare between the Spaniards and the Calusa, Menendez abandoned his efforts to pacify the fierce Indians of southern Florida.
The modern Port Charlotte area was largely platted and developed by the now-defunct General Development Corporation that also developed many other subdivisions and municipalities along Florida's west coast. Before this, the land was used as pasture for grazing cattle. It is located on a peninsula once owned by the Vanderbilt family.
