La Mesa California Senior Travel Tourist & Retirement Community

La Mesa, California is a picturesque senior tourist and retirement community.

La Mesa CA History

The first residents of the La Mesa area were Native Americans Indians known as the Kumeyaay. Later, during Spanish colonization, this region was part of the vast lands of Mission San Diego de Alcala. When Mexico became independent from Spain in 1821, Santiago Arguello was granted 60,000 acres. In 1868, Robert Allison purchased 4,000 acres from the Arguello estate. He operated a ranch and rest stop on the land that was known as Allison Springs. The town was founded the next year, in 1869. A land boom began as water and railroad transportation came into the area in the 1880's. That decade is known as the Southern California Land Boom because so many people were moving to the state.

In 1894, A.S. Crowder and Joseph Allison filed the La Mesa Springs subdivision map, and the new town became official. Ed Fletcher and William Gross developed an artist's community in the eastern part of town. Sherman C. Grable purchased 100 acres on Date Avenue in 1906 and began building a residential community near the downtown village. La Mesa officially incorporated as a City on February 16, 1912.
