Fishing & Boating Vacations
Boulder City, NV History
Boulder City, Nevada was a city planned and built in 1931 by the United States Government to house the workers who built Hoover Dam. Located just a few miles from Hoover Dam and approximately 20 miles from Las Vegas, the city was proud to claim that there was no gambling, drinking or prostitution within its gates. Access to the Federal community of Boulder City was tightly controlled. Every one of the four thousand who lived there either had a job or was in the immediate family of someone who had a job related to building the dam.
Boulder City continued to be managed by the Bureau of Reclamation until 1958, when the thirty-three square miles of land was turned over to an independent city government. The city charter approved by the residents prohibited gambling within the city limits. This provision still exists, making Boulder City the only place in Nevada where gambling is illegal. Alcohol sales were not permitted until 1969. In 1995, the city purchased an additional 167 square miles of land, making it the largest city in Nevada, land-wise.
