Sun City Arizona Senior Travel Planned Senior Citizen Community

Sun City, Arizona is a planned senior citizen community. Senior Travel Genie offers resources for Sun City.

Sun City, AZ History

In the late 1950’s, the Del Webb Corp acquired 20,000 acres of land adjacent to Youngtown. The land was part of a town once known as Marinette and used primarily for farming cotton. In 1959 the Webb Company began work on the then-unnamed community.

The community didn’t get its name until about a month prior to its Jan. 1, 1960 grand opening. The new project was called the “Marinette Retirement Community” until a new name could be found. A nationwide contest was held to name the community and, as legend has it, Del Webb himself selected the winning name after seeing it among the thousands of entries.

Sun City, AZ is a self-contained community with its own shopping centers and restaurants offering a wide variety of stores and services. Security, street repair, zoning protection and many other key community services are provided by Maricopa County since the community is unincorporated.
