Sun City West, Arizona is a master-planned active retirement community that began in 1978 when there was no longer land available in Sun City. Construction completed on Sun City West in 1997. The community is located two miles west of Sun City and twelve miles northwest of Phoenix.

Sun City West, AZ is an age restricted retirement community for people 55 and over that was developed by Del E. Webb Corp. It is unincorporated and uses resources such as fire, water, police, and trash services provided by Maricopa County.

Although new, the community has matured into a lush oasis in the Arizona desert. Recreational complexes, golf courses, plenty of convenient local businesses, churches and a nationally ranked hospital are all in place. Numerous clubs and civic organizations are available and residents are often said to be “too busy to retire”.

Recreational opportunities include the Pioneer Arizona Living History Museum, a replica of an 1880’s Arizona village where costumed volunteers put on demonstrations such as quilting and blacksmithing. The Black Canyon Shooting Range is a Maricopa County park with 1,400 acres devoted to indoor/outdoor rifle/pistol ranges and five miles of archery trails.
