Youngtown, AZ History

The first name for this town was Marinette, named by homesteaders for their hometown in Wisconsin. The Post Office officially called the town Marinette in 1912. In 1954, real estate broker Ben Schleifer and banker Clarence Suggs formed Youngtown Land and Investment Co. to buy 320 acres of farmland. In 1955, the real estate development company began constructing a retirement community under the euphemistic name Youngtown. The name Marinette was changed to Youngtown on Jan 1, 1958.

Youngtown is the first master-planned, adult community built exclusively for retirees. Youngtown was incorporated in 1960 and became the first city occupied soley by senior citizens.

Youngtown is a small town located astride the normally dry Agua Fria River in the northwestern part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The town covers a total area of 1.3 miles, which is all land.

Winters are mild and snow is extremely rare although it sometimes can be seen on the tops of the nearby White Tank Mountains after an unusually cold storm. Freezing temperatures are uncommon. High temperatures in the coolest months of December and January are typically in the 60's. The most uncomfortable time of year is early July through August when there is high humidity with very high temperatures.
