Brownsville TX History
Brownsville's earliest history began with the exploration and colonization by Spain after its conquest of Mexico. Colonization began in 1748, when General Jose de Escandon colonized Tamaulipas, the site where Brownsville was later located.
In 1835, Texas declared its independence from Mexico with the Rio Grande River as her western boundary. As a result, Mexico lost nearly half of the Tamaulipas area. Texas was an independent Republic for nine years until the end of the Mexican-American War when the Brownsville area officially became American territory. The city of Brownsville was founded in 1848, named after nearby Fort Brown. Brownsville incorporated in 1853.
During the Civil War, Brownsville was a major port used by the Confederate States of America for exporting large quantities of cotton and other products. The last battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Palmito Ranch, was fought on a field located a short distance from Brownsville. From 1865 to 1916, much time was spent in reconstruction and maintaining law and order. By the early 1900's, Brownsville, Texas was enjoying prosperity and a rapid increase in population.
