San Benito, Texas is a scenic retirement community located in the tropical Rio Grande Valley.

San Benito TX History

San Benito was first named Diaz, for Mexico's president, because the first settlers were predominantly of Mexican ancestry. The town is on the Concepción de Carricitos land grant from Spain, awarded to Bartolomé and Eugenio Fernández in 1789. The land for San Benito was obtained in the mid 1800’s by Judge Stephen Powers in return for legal services to the Fernández heirs. In 1904, Colonel Sam Robertson went into partnership with James Landrum and Benjamin Hicks, Powers's sons-in-law, to develop the town. The name San Benito is a combination of the given names of Robertson (Sam or "San") and Hicks (Benny), who was called "Don Benito."

The city incorporated in 1911. During the border disturbances of 1915-16, San Benito became a base for National Guard troops to combat bandits and murderers. Several fights involving troops and Texas Rangers occurred in the area.
