Golf Vacation in Edinburg Texas Ideal Retirement Community

Edinburg, Texas is an ideal senior vacation and retirement community located in the Rio Grande Valley.

Edinburg TX History

Edinburg was originally named “Chapin” after Dennis B. Chapin, one of the men who developed the community. In 1911, Chapin's involvement in a homicide caused the name to be changed to Edinburg in honor of John Young’s birthplace in Scotland. The town started as a ranching community, but the introduction of irrigation in 1915 led to an agricultural economy. Edinburg quickly became a center for buying and processing cotton, grain, and citrus produce. Local agriculture produced vegetables, sorghum, corn, and sugarcane. The city incorporated in 1919.

After highways and trucks replaced rail service, Edinburg benefited from being on a major highway intersection. By the 1980’s, the city had a large commercial freight industry. Centrally located within one of the largest trade corridors in the world, Edinburg is also the gateway to U.S. 281, which is being transformed into Interstate 69 or the NAFTA Highway. In 1999, more than 54% of all trade between Mexico and the United States made its way through South Texas ports of entry. Because of its location, the city has been named the "Gateway City" to the Rio Grande valley.
