Senior Travel Deals Vallejo California Senior Travel & Retirement Location

Vallejo, California is a waterfront senior travel and retirement location in the Bay Area.

Vallejo CA History

Vallejo was first inhabited by the Suisun and Karkin Indians. Native Americans lived in the region until the 1840's. In 1835, Mexican military officer Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo came to establish several land grants. The Rancho Suscol land grant included the area where Vallejo and Benicia are now located.

In 1850, General Vallejo donated 156 acres of his land and $370,000 to create a thriving new state capital. The actual founder of Vallejo was John B. Frisbie. When Frisbie married Vallejo's daughter Epifania, General Vallejo gave him power of attorney for the land grant. Frisbie encouraged settlers to stay in the area and sold them land to build houses and businesses. He helped establish the city's government, supported the thriving wheat-shipping business, presided over banks and founded the White Sulphur Springs Resort. Vallejo incorporated as a city in 1867.

The U. S. Navy purchased nearby Mare Island in 1853 to create the first naval installation on the west coast. The establishment of the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in 1854 caused Vallejo to flourish.
