San José, California is a premium senior travel community in the Bay Area.

San José CA History

Before Europeans came to this area, the Ohlone Indians lived here along the Guadalupe River. They were peaceful Indians who lived in huts made from grass.

In the 18th century, Spaniards came to the area. The first civil settlement in California was El Pueblo San José de Guadalupe founded in November 1777. It was a farming community that grew food for the Spanish military forces in San Francisco and Monterey. These settlers finally moved to the area that is now downtown San José.

Incorporated in 1850, San José was a large farming community and site of the first state capital. Prunes were the biggest crop along with apples, apricots, cherries, peaches and pears. Canneries were built to can the fruit.

The Peralta Adobe, located at 184 St. John Street, is the oldest building in San José. In 1807, Luis Peralta became the military deputy of San José. He lived in the adobe house which now has his name. During his term, three different flags flew over San Jose: the Spanish, the Mexican and the American flag.
