Senior Travel to Brunswick Georgia Senior Vacation Community

Brunswick, Georgia is the “Gateway to the Golden Isles” and a popular senior vacation community.

Brunswick GA History

Mark Carr, a captain under Gen. James Oglethorpe, was the area's first settler. He established a plantation in 1738 on 1,000 acres along the Turtle River. In 1771, the Royal Province of Georgia bought Carr's land and laid out the town of Brunswick. The town is named after King George II's ancestral home, the Hanover duchy of Braunsweig-Lunenburg in Germany.

The city incorporated in 1836, the same year Oglethorpe House hotel was built. During the Civil War, Confederate troops burned Brunswick’s wharves and Oglethorpe House to deter the Union Army.

In 1888, the Oglethorpe Hotel opened to immediate success. The December 1888 issue of Harper's Weekly predicted that "Brunswick by the Sea" was destined to become the winter Newport. Sidney Lanier, Georgia's Poet Laureate, sought relief from tuberculosis in Brunswick and immortalized the area with his world-famous poem, "The Marshes of Glynn."

For World War I, ships designed to evade mines were built in Brunswick. During World War II, blimps patrolled the area looking for German U-boats. Blimps from Brunswick's Glynco Base, the largest blimp base in the world, safely escorted 98,000 ships without a single vessel lost to enemy submarines.
