Augusta GA History
Augusta is the second largest and oldest city in Georgia. In 1737, British Gen. James E. Oglethorpe ordered the town be built to provide a first line of defense against the French and Spanish. He named the town in the honor of Princess Augusta, wife of Fredrick, Prince of Wales. Early settlers fought the surrounding Creek and Cherokee Native Indians. In 1773, the Creeks and Cherokees left after signing away more than 1.5 million acres at the Indian congress in Augusta.
When Savannah fell to the British on December 28, 1778, Augusta became the state capital. During the Revolutionary War, Augusta was occupied two times by British forces.
The Civil War first brought boom times to Augusta. The city’s Confederate Powder Works plant made nearly 3 million pounds of gunpowder for Confederate use. As the War continued, hard times hit the city. Union Forces eventually entered Augusta in May, 1865.
From its inception, Augusta has been a military town. During World War I, Augusta was filled with soldiers from Camp Hancock, opened in 1917. Camp Gordon opened in 1941.
