Macon, Georgia is a popular senior travel and retirement location located in the South.
Macon GA History
Native Indian tribes inhabited this area long before Spanish explorers arrived in 1540. In the late 1600’s, English traders settled in the area. Macon was founded in 1823 and named in honor of Nathaniel Macon, a powerful Georgia politician.
During the Civil War, the city supplied a hospital for wounded Confederate soldiers, a prison for Union soldiers and a manufacturing center for Confederate weapons. The Findley Iron Works built 80 1,500 lb. cannons between 1862 and 1864.
General George Stoneman's cavalry attacked Macon in 1864, but Confederate troops successfully defended the city. When it was feared that General William Sherman would enter Macon on his drive to the coast, the interment camp was broken up and the prisoners spread out to other area camps. When Sherman never entered the city, Governor Joseph E. Brown moved the state capital to Macon in November, 1864 to keep the state's records safe. The city was eventually captured and under the command of the Union Army by the end of the Civil War.
