Pompano Beach, Florida

Golf Vacation Pompano Beach Florida Fishing & Resort Community

Pompano Beach, Florida is a popular resort community and saltwater fishing area.

Pompano Beach FL History

Settlers first came to the Pompano area in 1880. When the railroad arrived in 1896, many more came for the area’s rich soil and mild temperatures. Farmers first grew pineapples, then switched to more lucrative winter vegetables. Farming was very important to the area’s economy.

Pompano incorporated in 1908. Following World War I, a large race track costing more than $1 million was built just southwest of town. After only a few days of racing and pari-mutuel betting, the State of Florida deemed it illegal gambling and closed it down. It was not until the 1950’s that horse racing returned to the track.

During World War II, the Federal government acquired land for an airfield northeast of Pompano. Blackouts were ordered on the beach and the Coast Guard patrolled the shoreline. Many residents were look-outs to spot enemy submarines.

In 1947, the City of Pompano merged with the municipality on the beach to become the City of Pompano Beach. Although farming remained an important component of Pompano Beach’s economy well into the 1960’s, tourism, light industry and boating became more important.
