Delray Beach FL History
In 1868, Wisconsin natives William and Sara Gleason purchased thousands of acres of land in various locations in Florida including in what is now the City of Delray Beach. In 1885, the State of Florida granted millions of acres of land to Henry Flagler for the construction of the Florida East Coast Railway. Flagler also purchased many hundreds of acres in the Delray Beach area.
In 1894, Michigan Congressman William S. Linton also bought tracts of land in the area. He returned in 1895 to develop the new town of Linton. Three years later, the town’s name was changed to "Delray" following crop-destroying freezes that caused William Linton to default on his land payments. In 1896, the railroad was completed through the town.
In 1904, "Yamato" was established as a Japanese agricultural colony south of Delray. Henry Flagler recruited the first settlers who were all men. Years later, their wives, children, relatives and friends joined them. George Morikami, a Japanese settler, donated more than 200 acres of land for the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach. In 1927, the Town of Delray and the Town of Delray Beach united to form the city of Delray Beach.
