Exclusive Retirement Community
Palm Beach, Florida is located on a sixteen mile-long barrier island. It is an exclusive retirement community and senior travel destination.
Palm Beach FL History
Palm Beach incorporated as a town in 1911. Henry M. Flagler, one of the founders of Standard Oil, established Palm Beach by opening the Royal Poinciana Hotel and the Breakers Hotel in 1894, declaring it the country's premier resort area. The Breakers was the largest hotel in the world at the time. With hallways totaling more than three miles in length, bellhops delivered messages to guests by bicycle.
Flagler sold house lots on the island to his millionaire friends. In 1901, he built Whitehall, a Beaux-Arts mansion on the island. His heirs sold the mansion in 1925 and it became an elegant hotel residence. In 1959, Jean Flagler Matthews purchased the property, acquired many of the mansion's original furnishings and opened it as the Flagler Museum.
Many affluent people have called Palm Beach home. Post cereal heiress and then-wife of E.F. Hutton, Marjorie Merriweather Post, built the Mar-A-Lago estate that Donald Trump now owns. Well-known Palm Beach homeowners today include the Kennedy Family, fashion designer Vera Wang, singer Jimmy Buffett and others.
