Gulfport, Mississippi is a popular resort and casino area located along the Gulf Coast.

Gulfport MS History

The Port of Gulfport was founded in 1845 and it is now one of the biggest in the nation. The Town of Gulfport began in 1891 as the site for a railroad terminus and it incorporated in 1898. After the harbor opened in 1902, the town developed into an important lumber-shipping center. With the depletion of timber resources, Gulfport broadened its shipping facilities and turned to manufacturing and a growing tourist trade. Gulfport continued to grow, but it did not flourish until the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad was completed.

Gulfport Mississippi – Championship Golf & Casinos

Today, Gulfport is the second largest city in Mississippi and a popular resort area. It is still an important seaport for shipping lumber, cotton, and seafood. As a port of entry, it receives large shipments of bananas and is the largest banana port in North America.

With its man-made white sandy beaches along the Gulf of Mexico, Gulfport is currently one of the fastest growing resort areas in Mississippi. Its beach is one of the longest artificial sand beaches (28 miles) in the world. Thousands of visitors come each year for the Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo. In addition, there are exhibits, museums and antebellum homes to visit. Luxurious 24-hour casinos and championship golf courses make Gulfport, Mississippi a favorite with Seniors.
