Pensacola Florida Senior Travel Deals Golf & Fishing Retirement Community

Pensacola, Florida is the site of America's first settlement. The city is now a popular golf and fishing retirement community on the Gulf Coast.

Pensacola FL History

Native American Indians were the first inhabitants of Pensacola. During the 1500’s, Panzacola, Chatot, and Sawokli Indians lived in the area. Spanish explorer Ponce de León came in 1513, but did not stay. In 1559, Spaniards returned to build a large settlement, making Pensacola the first settlement in the continental United States. Within two years, a devastating hurricane, famine and hostile attacks forced the surviving settlers to leave Florida. Spain did not attempt to settle the area again until 1696 when Spanish soldiers built a fort at what is now the Naval Air Station on Pensacola Bay.

Over the years, Pensacola changed hands often between Spain, France, England, the United States and the Confederate States. During the Civil War, Union troops held Fort Pickens and Confederate troops held Fort McRee. The Navy shipyard opened in 1825 and evolved into an air station for naval aviation. Fort Pickens was completed in 1834 and used until World War II.
