Native American Indians lived in the Biloxi area as early as 8,000 B.C. The first Europeans came in 1699 when French explorer Pierre Le Moyne sailed to present day Biloxi. By the late 1850’s, there were several fine hotels in Biloxi and many wealthy southerners built large waterfront summer homes in the area.
Biloxi was part of the Confederate States during the Civil War. In 1861, Biloxi surrendered to Union Naval Forces. After Reconstruction, the first seafood cannery in Biloxi opened in 1881. It was the Seafood Capital of the World in 1900. By 1910, Biloxi was the largest exporter of raw oysters, shipping over 15 million cans.
In 1992, Mississippi legalized dockside gaming requiring casinos to be on water. Since Biloxi was already a popular coastal vacation spot, many casinos opened nearby.
