Corpus Christi TX History
In prehistoric times, various tribes of Karankawa Native Indians inhabited this part of the Gulf Coast. Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca and his men were the first Europeans to visit the area. Europeans ignored the region until 1747, when a Spanish explorer led an expedition to the bay. The area remained uninhabited until 1839, when Henry Kinney and William Aubrey established a trading post on the west shore of Corpus Christi Bay. By the 1840’s, the settlement was called Corpus Christi, which means "the Body of Christ". The town incorporated in 1852.
During the early years of the Civil War, Corpus Christi served as an important port for Confederate shipments by defying the Union’s shipping blockade. To stop this, Union forces bombarded Corpus Christi on two occasions and occupied the town from 1863 until the early 1870’s.
In 1874, the main sea channel was dredged to allow large steamers to enter. A powerful hurricane destroyed much of the city in 1919, killing 350 to 400 people. As a result, a thirty-foot deep channel was constructed in 1923. A new system of channels forty feet deep and 400 feet wide was completed in 1965.
