Quitman Texas Golf Vacation Senior Travel & Retirement Community

Quitman, Texas is a popular retirement community and senior travel destination.

Quitman TX History

Caddo Indians lived in the Quitman area centuries before the first Europeans arrived. Pedro Vial first explored the area in 1788 when he made his way from Natchitoches, Louisiana, to San Antonio. Spain issued several land grants in the area, but they were relatively unimportant since few peopled settled in the Piney Woods region until after the Texas Revolution in 1836.

Quitman was established to serve as the county seat of Wood County in 1850. The town was named for John Anthony Quitman, the governor of Mississippi in 1850 and one of the most prominent citizens in the United States at that time. During its first year as county seat, Quitman attracted an influx of settlers from the Southern States and became the trading center for the county. These settlers brought slaves with them and began to reestablish the kind of slaveholding, cotton-plantation society they had known in their former homes. When the Civil War began, the town supported the Confederacy with men and material goods. After the Civil War, there was a period of military government and Reconstruction, which ended in 1873.
