Pittsburg TX History

Caddo and Cherokee Indians resided in the Pittsburg area until the early 1800’s, but they abandoned the area before settlers began arriving from other states in the late 1830’s. The community emerged in the 1850’s and was named Pittsburgh in honor of William Harrison Pitts, an early farmer and landowner. In 1893, the spelling of the town’s name was changed to Pittsburg. By 1860, Pittsburg was a major market center for a wide area.

When Camp County was organized in 1874, Pittsburg was elected as the county seat. The county courthouse was constructed on land donated by William H. Pitts with bricks that were manufactured in Pittsburg. In 1899, residents of Pittsburg secured a promise of $5,000 from Andrew Carnegie with the provision that the city fund a building and agree to maintain the library. The city council matched the $5,000 grant and a Carnegie Library was built in 1900. It was the first Carnegie library built in Texas, though it burned in 1939.
