Senior Travel to Lufkin Texas Fishing & Hunting in the Piney Woods

Lufkin, Texas is a popular retirement community that offers plentiful fishing and hunting in the Piney Woods.

Lufkin TX History

Lufkin was founded in 1882 as a railroad stop and named for Captain Abraham P. Lufkin, a Galveston cotton merchant and city councilman. The town incorporated on October 15, 1890. In 1892, Lufkin became the county seat of Angelina County in the heart of the Texas Forest Country. The town thrived with its proximity to the railroad and the forests that supplied the lumber industry. Between 1890 and 1920, a timber boom produced hundreds of sawmills in the Lufkin area.

In 1890, Joseph H. Kurth, Sr. and his two friends, S. W. Henderson, Sr. and Sam Wiener, organized the Angelina County Lumber Company, which became the forerunner of many innovations in lumber manufacturing and forest management in East Texas. At the height of their activity, the three men were involved in nearly a dozen Texas sawmills, a paper mill, foundries, hotels, movie theaters, railroads, investment companies, newspapers, radio and television stations, insurance firms, banks, hospitals, and many other enterprises in the Lufkin area.
