Nacogdoches TX History

Ceramic artifacts found from 2,000 B.C. prove the early presence of Native American Indians in the Nacogdoches area. Around 1250 to 1450 A.D., the Caddo or Nacogdoches Indians lived in the area.

Spanish explorer DeSoto arrived in 1542 and French explorer LaSalle arrived in 1685. In 1716, Spain established the mission Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe de los Nacogdoches, but abandoned it and forced settlers to leave the area in 1772. In 1779, Don Y'Barbo returned to build the Old Stone Fort and establish the town, making Nacogdoches the oldest town in Texas.

Nacogdoches was the site of three failed attempts to establish a Republic of Texas, the rebellions of Magee-Gutierrez (1812), Long (1819) and Fredonia (1826). Nine flags have flown over Nacogdoches as opposed to six that have flown over Texas. In 1832, citizens of Nacogdoches fired one of the opening guns of the Texas Revolution. In 1835, many citizens volunteered to fight in the Texas War for Independence. Most of the volunteers died in later battles of the Revolution, many at the Alamo.
