Long Beach Mississippi Senior Travel Seniors Choice Golf Community

Long Beach, Mississippi is a friendly recreational fishing and golf community on the Gulf Coast.

Long Beach MS History

When Long Beach was settled in 1788, it was called “Scott’s Station” in recognition of Dr. Scott, a landowner in the area. The name was later changed to Long Beach to describe the town’s wide, sloping beach. After the area's virgin yellow pine forests were depleted from logging, residents began farming the newly cleared land. In the late 1890's, W. J. Quarles started the truck farming industry in Long Beach. Area farmers shipped fresh produce daily to markets all across the U.S. At one time, Long Beach was known as the “Radish Capital of America”. In the early 1900’s, radishes were very popular in the North where beer parlors and saloons served them with beer, similar to the way pretzels and peanuts are served with beer today.

Long Beach incorporated as a town in 1905 and chose “The Friendly City” as its slogan. The town is still home to the Friendship Oak, a five hundred-year old live Oak tree located on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast. The legend is that those who enter the shadow of the tree will remain friends for life. Consequently, many wedding ceremonies have been conducted throughout the years under its wide branches.
