The Old City
Many senior travelers enjoy visiting Jerusalem Israel. At the center of Jerusalem is the Old City which was originally built by King David in 1004 B.C. The Old City is surrounded by a wall that is nearly 2 ½ miles long, has seven gates, 34 towers, and a citadel (the Tower of David). The city boasts many important holy sites for Jews, Christians and Muslims and is divided into four residential quarters: Armenian, Christian, Jewish and Moslem.
The Armenian Quarter is the smallest and contains the building for the Armenian Patriarchate. The Christian Quarter hosts the market, one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. It also has more than forty monasteries, churches and inns built for Christian pilgrims. The Jewish Quarter contains the Wailing Wall (Western Wall) and many interesting historic sites. The Muslim Quarter is the site of the Dome of the Rock and is the largest quarter.
In addition to the holy places and historic sites, there are dozens of museums to visit. A few of them are the Rockefeller Museum, the Bible Lands Museum, the Islamic Art Museum and the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Jerusalem offers all types of restaurants, eateries and coffee shops. It also has a large choice of accommodations ranging from luxury hotels to inexpensive inns, making Jerusalem a popular tourist destination for seniors.
