Thayer, Missouri

Thayer Missouri Senior Vacation Travel Senior Citizen Fishing Community

Thayer, Missouri is a small town that offers wonderful fishing and relaxation for seniors.

Thayer MO History

Thayer was founded in 1882 by George Nettleton as a division point for the Kansas City, Springfield and Memphis Railroad. The line from Memphis, Tennessee, to Thayer had easy curves and a flat grade while the Thayer to Springfield, Missouri, line had many sharp curves and a steep grade. Heavy trains from Memphis had to be divided to pass through the mountains to Springfield and Thayer was a halfway point between the two cities. The town was actually called Division until George Nettleton proposed Augusta, the name of his second wife. Upon incorporation in 1885, they discovered there was already an Augusta, Missouri. In 1886 the name Thayer was chosen in honor of Nathaniel Thayer, a director of the railroad.

Thayer Missouri – Great Fishing in the Ozarks

Thayer is a picturesque town built around a railroad economy nestled in the Ozark hills of southeastern Missouri on the banks of a blue-water stream which teems with bass, goggle-eye, perch, catfish, bullfrogs and an occasional beaver.

Located in the county with the most federal forest acreage in the state of Missouri, Thayer is a short drive from incredible floating and fishing at nearby Eleven Point River and Current River and is only 5 minutes from beautiful Spring River. Grand Gulf State Park, known at "Little Grand Canyon," is located six miles northwest of Thayer on W Highway. Seniors enjoy the great fishing and relaxation available in this small Ozark community.
