Bluffton South Carolina Golf Vacation Senior Vacation Community

Bluffton, South Carolina is a beautiful senior vacation community in the Lowcountry.

Bluffton SC History

The Yemassee Indians established ten towns with over 1,200 inhabitants in this area, making it “Indian Lands.” In 1715, the Yemassee War started and after several years of fighting, the Yemassee tribe migrated to Florida, opening the “Indian Lands” to European settlement. In 1718, the Lords Proprietors carved the area into several new baronies, which included the future town of Bluffton.

The town of Bluffton was eventually built on two adjoining parcels purchased by Benjamin Walls and James Kirk. The first homes were constructed during the early 1800’s by area plantation owners seeking the high ground and cool river breezes as an escape from the unhealthy conditions present on Lowcountry plantations. In 1852, Bluffton officially incorporated.

During the Civil War, Bluffton was a safe haven for those fleeing Union occupation of South Carolina barrier islands. It was also a headquarters for Confederate forces until Union forces destroyed the town in 1863. Approximately 60 structures were in the town before the attack. Two churches and fifteen residences remained standing after the attack. Bluffton was rebuilt in the 1880’s, when the town emerged as a commercial center for Beaufort County.
