Fredericksburg is one of many German settlements in Texas. The first wagon train of 120 settlers arrived in 1846 with each settler receiving one town lot and ten acres of farmland. The town was laid out like German villages along the Rhine and named Fredericksburg after Prince Frederick of Prussia. During the first two years, the Meusebach-Comanche Treaty was signed which helped eliminate the constant threat of Indian attack that was common in the area.
Religion played an important part in the lives of the settlers. Devout farmers drove as much as twenty miles into town for religious services. Fredericksburg, TX is known as “The City of Steeples” because of its many churches.
The German settlers tried to maintain their independence by steadfastly refusing to learn or use English. The first newspaper in the county was the German-language Fredericksburg Wochenblatt established in 1877. However, by 1930, the town had assimilated and was becoming known as a resort center with a tourist camp and hunting and fishing opportunities.
