Marble Falls TX History

The marble falls for which the town was named were used as a landmark by travelers and were referred to as the "great falls" or the "marble falls" of the Colorado River. In 1886, General Adam Rankin Johnson and nine others bought a large area of land which included the falls. The group formed a company to develop the town of Marble Falls. General Rankin had been blinded by a rifle ball during the Civil War and held captive by the Union Army for six months. In the early years, Marble Falls was known as “The Blind Man’s Town.”

General Johnson recognized the potential of the falls as a source of power when he developed the site. However, the Great Depression and World War II stalled plans to build a dam at Marble Falls. Finally, in 1925 a dam was built to supply electrical power to the Marble Falls Textile Mills Company. In the early 1950’s, the Max Starcke Dam was constructed. The new dam formed Lake Marble Falls, which buried the marble falls under water. Although the falls were “destroyed”, the community benefited from the increased recreational and municipal water supply. Today, the falls are only visible on those rare occasions when the LCRA lowers the lake for repairs.
