Resort Community for Seniors
Wimberley, Texas is a Hill Country resort community that is very popular with seniors.
Wimberley TX History
William C. Winters, a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto, was awarded a land grant for his service in the war between the Republic of Texas and Mexico. In 1856, he built a mill on the banks of Cypress Creek. After his death in 1864, his daughter Nancy and son-in-law John Cude inherited the mill. In 1874, Pleasant Wimberley paid $8,000 in gold to John Cude for 200 acres, the mill and house.
The successive names of the town are evidence of the importance of the mill. They were Winters' Mill, Cude's Mill, Wimberley's Mill and ultimately, Wimberley. In 1880, San Marcos postmaster Alfred vom Stein made application for a post office to serve the community. He submitted the name Wimberleyville, but the name granted was simply Wimberley.
As a grist mill, saw mill and cotton gin, the mill provided flour, sorghum, cotton, shingles and lumber for the area. John Will Pyland, the husband of Pleasant's granddaughter, became the last millwright in 1907. The mill ceased operation in 1925.
