Golf Vacation Community
North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is a senior golf vacation community and retirement area.
North Myrtle Beach SC History
The North Myrtle Beach area was originally inhabited by the Winyah and Waccamaw Indians. These Indians called the area “Chicora,” meaning “the land.” Spaniards were next to explore the area as early as 1526, then Blackbeard’s pirates cruised the bays and inlets in the 1700’s. Legend has it that some of the treasure from Blackbeard's ship, Queen Anne's Revenge, is still at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North Myrtle Beach. During the Plantation Era, the Cherry Grove Beach area was home to many flourishing indigo plantations.
Because there was insufficient means to reach the North Myrtle Beach area, most of the beach remained uninhabited until 1900, when the Burroughs & Chapin families started the first railroad to service the area.
North Myrtle Beach is located in Horry County, named after wealthy plantation owner and Revolutionary War General, Peter Horry. The city is broken into four sections from north to south. They are Cherry Grove, Ocean Drive, Crescent Beach, and Windy Hill. In 1992, these formerly separate municipalities combined into the single town of North Myrtle Beach, with Atlantic Beach choosing to remain independent.
