OK, you may not agree that an ice cream parlor is a restaurant in the strictest sense, but hey, you can get a sandwich, soup, or salad. And, because it’s usually hot in Savannah, you really should have something to cool you down, like an ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS HUCKLEBERRY ICE CREAM SUNDAE. Where else could you get that? Evidence that it’s not a bit touristy at Leopold’s is that, when asked if they sell bottles of their huckleberry sauce, they said no, they hadn’t thought anyone would want to buy just the sauce. The day we were there, we ran into the sister of Johnny Mercer, the colorful writer of so much wonderful music like “Skylark” and “Moon River.” She was the epitome of graciousness. Of course we wouldn’t have known who she was except that our host and she sing in the same choir. Although she was perfectly presentable, she apologized for her appearance and said she’d just run in to get a pint of ice cream because her “little neighbor” was coming for dinner.
